Local Sports

Spectator Sports: Unfortunately, there are no major professional teams in Hawaii, but there is the University of Hawaii athletics program, which includes basketball, baseball, softball, football, golf, swimming & diving, tennis, volleyball, sand volleyball, cross country, sailing, soccer, track & field, water polo, and cheerleading programs.

While there isn't a local pro team, The Hawaii Bowl, a NCAA post-season football game, and the Pro Bowl, the NFL All-Star game, have both been played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu for many years.

Surfing is very popular and the island offers countless world-class beaches and often legendary swells for even the most experienced surfers. There are plenty of areas near Honolulu, including Waikiki Beach, for beginners as well.

Golf is very popular as the outstanding weather and scenery lends itself to year-round enjoyability, and there are dozens of courses in the Fort Shafter area.

Hunting: See the website for the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife (Hunting in Hawaii) for details on getting a Hawaii hunting license. You must have local hunting education cards, and personnel from out of state should be aware that Hawaii has strong firearms regulations. Game in Hawaii includes dove, francolin, grouse, partridge, pheasant, wild turkey, feral sheep, feral pig, feral goat, and deer.

Fishing: There is relatively little freshwater fishing in Hawaii, but it does include trout and bass and a few native species, in the larger streams and some reservoirs. Marine fishing is much more abundant, and basic fishing does not require license or permits, but many other fish activities do - see the website for the Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources for details.
